Ugly Malaysian Mentality

This is one of the letter from the public, posted in The Star.

I really found it disgusting.

I REFER to the recent statement by Human Resources Deputy Minister Datuk Noraini Ahmad on calls to government departments and organisations not to hold seminars and courses in hotels any more.

As a Member of Parliament who represents the people, she should care for the welfare of the people who elected her and do more research and homework before speaking out.

In my opinion, the decision to stop courses and seminars by government organisations and departments in hotels will destroy most hotel entrepreneurs.

Imagine how many hotel workers will face the possibility of losing their jobs if hotels go out of business.

It has been reported that 70% of the hotels income comes from the holding of courses and seminars by the Government. As a hotelier, let me share my knowledge and experience.

For your information, most hotels, three-star and below, depend on courses/seminars packages by the Government.

I believe that in the current situation, only the Government has the money and capability to spend on courses and training and the money spent will be good for the economy.

Its true that a hoteliers main goal is to attract tourists but please bear in mind the number of hotels around and the stiff competition. There are not enough foreign tourists and they come during certain seasons.

And with the current economic situation, how many local people will be able to go on vacation?

It is time for all of us to save, but please make sure that in savings made by the Government, sections of industries are not affected.

Imagine when all the bookings that have been made until the end of the year are cancelled, how we are going to operate? How are we going to pay the bills, salaries and loans?

I admire and support the statement by the Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Ali Rustam that the Malacca state government would continue holding courses and seminars in hotels.

He really knows the concept of economic development and the difficulty that hoteliers and hotel staff will face if these activities are stopped.

ISMAIL ABDUL RAHMAN,

Langkawi.

So, we not only have to spend TENS of BILLIONS malaysian ringgit to literally subsidized the bloody car industry, now all tax payers are supposed to feed everyone in the hotel industry too?

Give me a break.

I agree. If hotels need to depend on government functions to survive, they don’t deserve to stay in business.
