Extending School Hours

There has been quite a bit of debating recently, centering around whether we should extend school hours to 4pm.

This obviously stem from the Nurin’s case.

What troubles me, is that the recent debate in the newspaper seemed to be about whether it is fair for teachers, and whether or not teacher will be ‘degraded’ to babysitters.

Excuse me, but shouldn’t we be thinking about those kids first? Whether extending the hours will be beneficial to our kids?

extending school hours

To me personally, our schools are ill-equiped for such ‘bold steps’.

Classrooms are over crowded, the entire school is understaffed, not enough space for all the kids, there isn’t even a proper place to take a nap if the kid feel tired.

No, I am not demanding too much. We are talking about small kids here. (Lets limit ourself to primary school)
Statistics and studies over and over again proven that even adult are more productive after a short nap. So why are we trying to impose something different for our own kid? It is rather counter productive, don’t you think? Especially when everyone is saying loudly “the best for our kid?”

To me, at least, they should shorten the hours. Starting school at 7.30am and end at 12.30noon is already way too long. (that they are teaching too many useless subjects in school, I better talk about it in another post)

In a way it is good if it sorts of functions as a childcare. Too short hours the parents have to spend too much time (on the roads) sending/fetching the kids. But the facilities must be good for this to happen.

Maybe they should be asking the police to work harder from 7:30 am to 4 pm. This would be a better solution, no?

I agree with you Yenjai - you know the teachers will be dreading this which means the kids will be at a place where they are not welcome. Shouldn’t push the responsibility to the school
