Know your audience

I guess everyone who give public speeches know this line — know your audience, failing which you are launching yourself into disaster.

My wife attended a talk last Saturday, a ‘career opportunity talk’ given by an insurance agent.

Given that there were only six participants, one would expect the speaker to spend a couple of minutes getting to know his target group.

know your audience

As oppose to his normal group of school leavers, these are people who already has a steady job and good income. They are here just to see ‘extra opportunity’.

This speaker already started on the wrong footling by boasting that he is driving a Toyota Altis.

Then he further ridiculed the group by asking : Who among you can save RM200 per month?

Puleeezzzzzz. I know we are poor, and we openly admit it, but we are not THAT bad? What is there to look up to, saving Rm200 per month?

To rub it in further, he picked on my wife: Tell me, how many employee your company currently have?

Wife: At least a hundred (don’t want to scare this guy too much)

Speaker: Wow, big company. So where do you see yourself in 5 years? What position you will be holding?

Wife: If I want it, I can be a Senior Manager in 5 years.

Speaker (in jeer): You sure? You want it, doesn’t mean your company will let you?

Hey, stop that attitude. She come to your talk, is not for the purpose to prove herself to you, ok?

And I never doubt my wife will make the position of Senior Manager, probably in less than 5 years.

Just that she doesn’t want it, and I definitely is against it.

Needless to say, she left the ‘opportunity talk’ full of resentment, and can’t wait to bad mouth that dumbhead speaker.

He’s an insurance agent, should know better. Gosh, he needs to go for re-training. Too arrogant.

All these are the sales tactic, to promise you a better life style. You’re right, this terrible sales guy was using the wrong approach. So action for what? RM200 is like… 5 sponsored posts.

And good for your wife not pursuing the senior management position. Sometimes life is not only about position and money. Family is important too so we must find a balance. Sigh.. I so long winded today. First talk to my grandchildren and now telling grandfather story.

Wa, that’s one bad speaker. I really dislike this type of speech where the speaker keep boasting about himself and put everyone else down. Isn’t it suppose to be motivative?!

well, you can not use the same old tactic to the different group of ppl. Maybe it’ll work if the target audiences are those fresh graduates or for those really struggle at work.
However, i do enjoy sitting in and listening to them, i’ll just sit there and start analysing their strategy and improvements needed. so hopefully the same mistakes won’t happen to me…hehe:)
