War @ Potter

I was surprised to found out yesterday that they have cancelled the ‘launching and breakfast’ session today, at Popular book stores. It left me confused. What had happened?

The issue became clear when I saw the news at night. Carrefour and Tesco had ganged up and launched a price war.

I have nothing against price war. It is the way they do it which really irk me. They should not announced such thing at the very last minute, and leave everyone in a lurch. Not only it is underhanded dirty tactics, it leave a bad taste in all the consumers mouth. We will be very wary the next time we have business dealing with these hypermarket. Where is their business ethics?

The four bookstores had taken a huge step, in declaring they will boycott the sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Only those who pre-ordered will be able to get the book from the stores.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Knowing that, I expect no crowd this morning, when I turn up at Popular Bookstore. To my surprise, even at 7.07 am, already a huge crowd was lining in front of me! Wow. So many fans actually preordered the book? Amazing!

There are a bunch of reporters from newspapers and TV stations in the store. I heard some of the interviews: How do you feel about the hypermarket throwing a price war?

Duh.

I went to tesco last night, 1:30am.
It was quiet there but I’ve seen a few people went in just to get the book.
It is selling at £8.99, £5 if spend more than £50 in store.

RRP for the book is £17.99.

I didn’t buy it, I am not a big fan of the book, well, might do after a month or so.

Price wars are unethical but the book is so expensive. I probably would have bought the cheaper one if I had wanted to buy it in the first place.

jonzz Price war is not unethical by itself.
But it had to be done properly, for the whole industry to thrive.

Digi and Maxis had done beautifully in regards of price war
