7 ways to be a good patient (7 random facts)
Pretty and Lengleng Eve tag me for 7 random facts about myself.
Eve has write 7 ways patients had irritated her.
I guess I will just write … 7 ways patients can win her heart? (To win doctors’ heart in general)
1) I put it as number 1, not by chance. This is really NUMBER ONE.
DO NOT drag your feet until the last minute. If you think you should see a doctor, probably you are right. Get your appointment and go see a doctor.
2) You already know the doctor will likely ask you : How can I help you?
So prepare the answer.
Why should you appear surprise when your doctor ask you that?
If you think your answers might be complicated, maybe you should write it down on paper, as a list.
3) When you tell your sickness, just tell how you feel.
If you have headache, just say you have headache. Don’t say: I think I have aneurysm, as I have a throbbing headache.
Only after you have finish describing your problem, and you will like to suggest likely causes, do it at the end. Not as the first line.
You will ask: What if the doctor keep interrupting me, and I might not finish what I wanted to say? Then look at number 4
4) Choose a doctor which is ‘compatible’ with you. Try not to choose a doctor which you think will most likely have communication problem with you. Most doctor-patient problems arise because of communication breakdown. So if you think you can’t convey to him, or vice versa, probably you should get another doctor.
5) Dress properly. Here, I don’t mean you should wear a gown or tuxedo. I mean, a simple dress which makes the job easy.
You should not wear a coat as thick as an armor which also require 15 minutes to remove, if you expect your doctor to listen to your heart. Make sense?
Likewise, you are there to get your problem solve. You are not there to seduce him. Better keep your plunging neckline for some other occasion.
6) You are there to get an opinion. If you think that opinion will not matter to you, then probably you should not waste time going there.
7) Respect the business hour. If the time state “close by 9 pm”, unless it is really an emergency and you can’t help it, do not arrive at 8.59pm. Most likely the doctor will just rush through everything, and you end up not getting optimum care.
These are not merely points to make your doctor happy. These are to make your doctor-patient’s relationship a successful one. By doing that, it definitely will improve the outcome of your visit.

hanneng You are so honest
cc Poke poke you. You har … you wait … you wait …
Cannot wear plunging neckline when consulting doctor? hehehe….. you must have met quite a number of ladies who do that.
Personally, I don’t like to see doctors. I try to self-medicate. Doctors want to earn my money, very difficult. hahaha…..
ECL sigh. Like I say, I have more embarrassing moment than I care to admit You will be surprise at … how it turn … even during a simple consultation session
it’s really a good post, something good for us to know.
I always prepare to tell my problems, and ask for the reasons/suggestions, and sometimes follow by my common problems, such as I had gastric problem last time, I feel dizzy easily… haha~~ just to add on. :p
I like doctors who talk much to me. haha~~ not talking nonsense, but to tell me why caused my sickness, what I should do to get well soon or prevent it next time. Sometimes, after I told my sickness to some doctors, they just kept quiet, ok, done. That’s it.
Very informative! But I encounter a lot of docs who didn’t turn up on time leh. The forehead was boiling ..so as the blood too when the nurse kept saying the doc is not in yet! hehee
Oh yea, I postponed my gynae visit for 3rd time liao!! hahaa
kaka You are from the ‘good patient’ group, even before meeting you
hoiling turn up on time? Where did he go?
Late for work or came back late from lunch or dun know where he went. Anyway, now very seldom lah. Like ECL said, I always self-medicate!! hehe
Plunging V-necks are usually not a problem la.
Easier to examine the thyroid, eh?
