Air Conditioner — Car

Posted in Uncategorized on Nov 4th, 2006, 1:24 pm by yenjai

When we are shopping for an air conditioner for our room, one of the first thing that we ask the sales person is : How powerful is this aircon? One horse-power? Two horse-power?

Peculiarly, when we buy our car, we never ask this question. We just take for granted that the air conditioner will be able to cater to our needs.

Just look at these two cars:

car air conditioner

car air conditioner

You would expect them to have some difference in their air conditioners. Exactly how much difference? I don’t think any person outside the automobile industry can answer that.

Is air conditioner so inconsequential in the comfort level of a car? I doubt it. I would even say it is among the top five items that I need in a car during the journey.

If so, why had we all overlooked the spects of the air conditioner?

Air conditioner is actually one of the aspects which a customer would look for when they wanted to buy a car. But actually, air conditioner of a car is not the same as air conditioner of a room. For a car, the amount of space to cool down is actually a lot more smaller compare to a room. So, some of the customers don’t really find it important. Nowadays, air conditioner of cars are almost the same, at least, brand new cars. You can try a brand new Honda City’s air conditioner and a brand new Toyota Vios. Both of them actually with the same quality. Unless, you go for a really low cost car (you know what brand I’m mentioning :P). If you really want your car to be cool, you can try have the glasses of your car tinted. Some of the tinted glasses can reject heat of up to 80% (if I remember it correctly) and can even reject UV lights. The best thing is, it’s approved by JPJ!

Kok, just curious. How different is the aircon in a Honda City’s aircon with a Mercedes Benz’s ? Is the latter more powerful?

True never really gave much importance to it. I suppose Kok is right in that if the car is tinted the space is actually small. Even for a cheap car like mine I rarely put my air con speed to anything more than 3

I’m not really sure about the Mercedes Benz. Just look at the price of a Mercedes Benz, it’s so much expensive than the Honda City. You can expect a better brand of air conditioner for the Mercedes Benz. But at the end of the day, like George said, you won’t actually blast the air conditioner. You’ll just tune only to the temperature which suits you. So, it doesn’t actually make a difference if you have a more powerful air conditioner or just a normal air conditioner.
