If you are well versed with the Chinese Tradition, you would have noticed that quite a few of the ‘proper wedding steps’ had been skipped, so far. I guess modern people consider those redundant. Peculiarly, the next step had been preserved.
5) Grand Gifts: (Guo Da Li as commonly known)
This is consider the most important step among the rituals before the wedding ceremony. Fifteen to twenty days before the wedding ceremony, the groom’s family will bring cash and present to the bride’s family.

(I got the photo from this blog.)
A wide variety of present can be included. Some of the popular choices are:
- dragon-phoenix cakes
- Dried seafood and mushroom and Fat Cai
- Poultries
- Fish
- Coconut
If you are observant, you will find that everything will be given in even number, as the popular chinese saying “good things come in double”.
For a more detailed explanation on Grand Gift, maybe you should read it here.
6) Setting of a bed: The groom will choose a room to decorate as the ‘xin fang’ (new room). Here, the bed will get a new linen (this linen sometimes is given by the bride’s family to the groom’s family).
Most couples choose to forgo this particular step.
