Happier Life

This is in response to Group writing Project “How To”. A big thank you to Darren Rowse for organising this writing project.

Volumes had been written about how to lead a happier life. I would like to share a simple fact which might work for you. (It definitely work for me)

Live nearer to your place of work.

Almost everyone who live in the city will have to wake up early, endures traffic jam or stuck in public transport to get to work.

After work, you will have to endure the torture again. By the time you reach home, you will be totally exhausted.

public transportWhy not live nearer to your offce or your place of work?

It might not be possible in a highly dense city. So why not get a job outside the city? You might never get a job that is as highly paid as your current one, but does a high salary equals happy life?

Imagine if you and your spouse choose to do that, you will be able to

  • reach your workplace in five minutes
  • send your kid to school and still reach your workplace on time
  • to go home to have a look at your kids if they are sick, and be back to your workplace within 30 minutes
  • have lunch and dinner with your spouse (if you choose to)
  • Isn’t that more happy than having burger in your workplace, getting stuck in traffic jam for an hour, reach home after all your kids have fall asleep?

I used to stay near to my office for my previous jobs.
Yeah, it’s so much more convenient….
I can sleep late, and go home early. hehe~~
But, getting the job you want is not only about the money, it’s the work environment and the work itself really interest you.
and the opportunity of learning & improving your skills too.
I used to think of workin in Ipoh, my hometown, but it’s like difficult to get a programming job.
To get a place near to your workplace, then you gotta stay in the crowded area, and the cost is definitely high.
Finally, I chose a place where I stay happily, though it takes time to go to work. On the journey to work, I just try to utilize it…. well, my husband sends me to work now, so I’ll spend time either chatting with him, or sleeping. :p
I still feel happy now…. perhaps I just got used to it already.

Then work from home is even better?

Work from home has the disadvantage of the blurring between personal time and working hour

Great article, Yenjai. I’ve written a little bit about this myself on my blog. I think we can waste a lot of time during the day on the commute to and from work. I spend up to two hours in my car every day. Even if we can’t move closer to work, though, we can always try to fill that time up with something productive like listening to audio books or writing (on the train). Thanks for the tips!

Being worked in SOHO type environment make me lazy. The price of being too convenient and flexi. ;)

Long commutes can wear you out, I agree…I’ve always enjoyed the jobs that i lived closer to.

LOL it seems that we always end up at least 45 minutes away from work regardless of our attempts!! Our how-to is up as well if you’d like to check it out!!

    9. yenjai 说道:

Jersey girl, yeah. The nearer, the better.
But leave the poor husband’s printer alone :P

Mamaduck, thanks for coming to my blog.
Yeah, we always end up short, but that doesn’t stop us from trying ^-^ (just as how we can still have fun while being parents)
